Looking Ahead
Luke 2:30-32 “for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. (NRSV)”
The words above (Luke 2:30-32) come from Simeon as Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus to the Temple for purification according to the Law of Moses. Simeon recognizes that this baby is the salvation from God that the people have long awaited. The one John called “the one true light” that has come into the world.
On January 5th, we celebrated Epiphany Sunday. Epiphany Sunday is a day to celebrate the revelation of Jesus as the savior prophesied in the Old Testament and also as the “one true light” that has come into the world. Yet, Epiphany is also a season. A season that takes us all the way up to Lent. The season of Epiphany both celebrates the light that has come into the world and celebrates what that incredible truth means for you and for me.
As we move into 2025, through the Gospel readings of this season, we will see how the light of Christ has reached outsiders from the beginning and continues to grow, lighting the dark places throughout our world and in our own hearts. And we will consider the questions, “What does this truth mean for us?” and “What will our response be?”
