                                                           Seniors Alive!

Eighty-six people attended the June 5th Seniors Alive event to hear David Norman share his story about being on the last helicopter out of VietNam.  He related he served two tours in VietNam, the first being in combat; there were twelve men in his group; four came home.  His second tour, he served as a Marine guard at the U. S. Embassy in Saigon.  David Norman was one of the brave servicemen who evacuated over 7,000 Americans and allies from the United States Embassy in 1975.  Many Americans were safely evacuated by helicopter, but those remaining stranded on the roof of the embassy, included David.  A U. S. pilot flying over the embassy at low altitude spotted those servicemen stranded and made a rescue flight under fire and all eleven men made it home alive. He retired from the Marine Corp in 2002 and joined the Miami County Sheriff’s Office in March 2003.  He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in August 2024 as a Captain.  He was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the Miami County Recorder.  In November 2024, he was elected to be the Miami County Recorder, a position he continues to fill.

Following his presentation, he received a standing ovation, tears from a lady in attendance, and several hugs.  Everyone present appreciated the courage, the heroism, and the sacrifices made by David Norman.  A donation will be made to the Miami County Veterans Museum in recognition of Dave’s service to his country and the many years of service to the residents of Miami County.

There will not be a Seniors Alive in July; however, we will be back on Friday, August 7th with Dr. Brian Olson who will be speaking about Health and Nutrition for Seniors.

Have a safe and Happy July 4th!
